Building a Coastal Homestead

I’m Rachel Liz, and I believe the grass is greener where you water it! You don’t need the perfect plot of land to get started on your homesteading journey. I wanted to start creating that life here, in my small coastal town, and I’m more than happy to be the little experiment you can learn from!

Working with what you have.

Homestead

Let’s see just how much of a homesteading lifestyle we can do with a small property in a little beach town.

Starting Small

I found this shelving unit on the side of the road one day. It was in perfect condition. I then searched for days for terracotta pots because I did not want to use plastic. I found a landscaper selling in bulk on facebook marketplace and he cut me a deal. I wasn’t quite ready to dive into seed starting at this point so I picked up a variety of herbs and a few small vegetable seedlings from the garden center. This day sitting in the sun, my arms elbow-deep in soil, made my heart sing.

From Seeds to Seedlings

After months of my herb shelf thriving (barring one mishap), we expanded to raised planter beds. I did hours upon hours of research to find the right seeds that would do well in my garden zone at this time of year. The day the seeds arrived in the mail, I got to planting. I was so proud of my soil mixture and very grateful to a few YouTube creators who shared their knowledge about it. Off the little seeds went!

Welcoming the Ladies

Having chickens or ducks is the obvious next step in this whole process. At least in my opinion. Luckily, my brother and sister-in-law were a step ahead of me so I could learn from them. The ladies have been such a joy to watch. Their little coop turned into a larger run and they get to forage in the entire backyard under supervision. They are curious little creatures and such good egg-layers! They got a couple different breeds so there would be a variety of plumage to look at, but I honestly can’t pick my favorite!

Embracing a World of Self-Sufficiency

We can’t do everything all at once. It takes time. I started with one herb on my apartment windowsill. Now, I have raised planter beds in an actual yard, with an enclosure to protect the plants from pests. I learned how to make sourdough bread, and then yogurt. I want chickens or ducks soon so we can have fresh eggs. The point is, start small and be curious. There is a lot to learn but that’s the fun of it! So many of my friends tell me it’s overwhelming and they don’t know where to start – that’s what this page is for!

Documenting the Holistic Lifestyle

What I’ve learned from my work in Marketing, Business Development, and Brand Consulting is that the power of social media is not slowing down at all.

I help my clients create a strong digital footprint and strategy so they can reach the audience that cares about their work, all while keeping everything organized so no new business opportunity slips through the cracks!

So, with this passion project of mine, I wanted to use what I know to share everything I’m learning as much as I can so I can be a resource to others with a similar mindset or passion!

I plan to share as much as I can for free with my social media platforms and this website – but I have a lot of exciting other things in the works that will be available for sale should you want it.

Interested in working together?

Whether you’re a green-forward/holistic company, or a brand interested in consulting or partnering, I’d be happy to discuss.

How the dream of the Coastal Homestead came to be.

Question: what is truly possible in a small coastal suburb? I grew up in Southeast Florida – on boats, jetskis, knee boards, surf boards, and paddle boards – surrounded by manatees, and pelicans, and eating kingfish, wahoo, and lobster. My favorite days were ones spent entirely outside exploring different parks…
